Pastor’s Corner: The Stone Rejected

Pastor Glenn DeSilva

Psalm 118:22 “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.”

In construction, the cornerstone is the most important stone in the entire structure. It is the stone that sets the alignment and stability for everything else that follows. Without a properly placed cornerstone, the whole building can become unstable. Yet the verse tells us something remarkable: the very stone the builders rejected—considered unfit, useless, or unworthy—became the most essential part of the structure. This truth reveals something profound about the way God works.

Human judgment often looks at outward appearance, reputation, or immediate usefulness. Builders in the ancient world would carefully examine stones and discard any that did not seem suitable. A stone might be rejected because it appeared irregular, too rough, or simply different from what they expected. But sometimes what humans reject, God chooses. Throughout Scripture, we see this pattern repeatedly. God chooses the unlikely, the overlooked, and the underestimated. What seems insignificant in the eyes of people becomes powerful in the hands of God.

This verse ultimately points to Jesus Christ. He was rejected by many during His earthly ministry—misunderstood, opposed, and even crucified. Yet through that rejection, God established Him as the cornerstone of salvation. The One who was cast aside became the foundation upon which faith and hope are built.

But this truth also speaks into our personal lives. Many people carry memories of rejection—moments when they felt overlooked, dismissed, or unappreciated. Perhaps a dream was ignored, a voice was silenced, or a person was told they were not good enough. Those experiences can make us feel like discarded stones on the side of the road.

Yet God sees differently. The places in our lives that feel rejected or broken are often the very places God uses to build something meaningful. What others consider a weakness may become a testimony of God’s strength. What looks like failure may become the foundation of growth, humility, and purpose. God is the master builder. He knows exactly where every stone belongs. Nothing in our lives is wasted when it is placed in His hands.

If you feel overlooked today, remember this promise: rejection does not determine your value—God does. The stone that seemed unwanted may still become the cornerstone in the structure God is building. Trust the Builder. He is still at work.
