PARL: Will It Be Illegal to Share Jesus?

[This is a guest blog post from Willowdale’s Public Affairs and Religious Liberty Ministry.]

Will it one day be illegal to share the truth about Jesus Christ—to speak about the Ten Commandments, the Second Coming, or the judgment? What does Bill C-9, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (hate propaganda, hate crime and access to religious or cultural places), mean for our ability to live out our faith and obey Christ’s command to share the gospel?

These are important and responsible questions for Christians to ask. The Christian Legal Fellowship has been engaging directly with lawmakers to understand Bill C-9 and to highlight its potential implications for religious freedom and freedom of expression. Through respectful dialogue with Members of Parliament, CLF is ensuring that the voice of faith communities is heard within Canada’s democratic process.

We are grateful for a democratic system that values consultation and allows constituents—including churches—to engage with those who shape our laws. This freedom to participate is something we must steward wisely.  We are therefore encouraged to learn more by reading the full analysis and reflections shared by the Christian Legal Fellowship, and to consider how you can be involved—by staying informed, praying, engaging with your MP, or supporting CLF’s ongoing work. The fuller statement is available on the Christian Legal Fellowship website, where these issues are addressed in greater depth and clarity.
